The Function of Nothing

Whitespace separates groups of related content. It creates hierarchy without borders. It gives the eye a resting place between complex elements. Remove whitespace and everything collapses into noise.

Whitespace is to interface design what silence is to music. It gives the notes meaning.

In Persephonie's tree interface, the space between nodes is just as important as the nodes themselves. It communicates that these are separate ideas. It prevents the visual system from merging distinct options into a single blob.
